For Sale: Condo at the Original Playboy Mansion

CHICAGO — You can own a piece of the original Playboy Mansion now that a part of it has gone on the market.

A single-floor residence carved from the historic 70-room home made famous as the Playboy Mansion is on the block in Chicago's Gold Coast for $6.7 million.

Playboy founder Hugh Hefner bought the brick-and-limestone building in 1959 and used it as his Chicago home base during the 1970s, when he traveled to and from his famed Los Angeles estate in Holmby Hills.

Hefner later donated the building to the Chicago Art Institute in 1989, and it was eventually sold to a developer who converted it to condos.

"Originally the mansion’s ballroom, the living room is 52 x 27 feet with original paneling and soaring ceiling heights," according to Baird & Warner, its listing agent. "Oversized formal dining space is currently as a family room adjacent to a cook’s kitchen with attached butler’s pantry."

Current property owner Abby McCormick O'Neil paid $2.1 million in 1994 through a bank trust for the four-bedroom 7,874-square-foot unit.
